BOYSEN® Contributes to Cleaner Air through 'Air-cleaning' Paint

December 21 2011 -

Clean air is essential to life, and we need pure, unadulterated air in order to maintain good health. However, modern living, with its priority for industrialization and convenient transportation, has put a heavy toll on the atmosphere where we breathe. In many regions of the worlds, especially in the Asia-Pacific, air pollution has become an utmost concern.

In the Philippines, the quality of breathable air is suffering at an alarming rate, most especially in the urban centers like Metro Manila. According to the Manila Observatory, the country’s oldest weather information service, the most significant source of particulate pollution in Metro Manila is the transport sector. This sector's contribution is consistently substantial, varying from 50 to 90 per cent at various sampling sites in the city all throughout the year. Manila’s air is heavily saturated with fumes from diesel-powered public transportation like jeepneys, tricycles and buses, while many privately owned vehicles are run by premium gasoline.

The report adds that major pollution hotspots are found to be concentrated along major arteries and dense traffic networks. Vehicular traffic and its resulting air pollution is something that most people living in urban areas accept as a fact of life. But while sitting in traffic may test one’s patience every now and then, the health effects from exposure to air pollution are more serious. A World Health Organization (WHO) study confirms that air pollution kills three times more than vehicular accidents, while a Philippine Environment Monitor report in 2007 confirms 1 out of 8 premature deaths are caused by air pollution.

Recent incidences of smog formation over Metro Manila are indications of continued deterioration of air quality, especially at a time when the cold spell that comes with the Christmas season would be its main agent. It even affected the early morning traffic in some main thoroughfares like Commonwealth Avenue, East Avenue and EDSA as poor visibility caused by the smog poses a danger to motorists. Unfortunately, not too many people know that smog is a threat to human health, especially to those who exercise outdoors in the morning. And now, we can’t even blame the weather as the cause of illnesses because each of us is partly responsible for its occurrence.

While the government has made strides in their efforts to combat air pollution, the implementation of environmental laws and continue to affect those who are most vulnerable to it: ordinary people, especially pregnant women, children and the elderly.

Cleaner Air = Longer Life

Every little bit counts in the fight against air pollution. A study in Europe has found that even very small cuts in pollution can benefit health, and a recent Harvard University study found that people living in cities where air pollution decreased in recent decades saw their life expectancy increase an average of five months as a result of cleaner air.

More developed countries, especially in Europe, have effectively reduced the volume of vehicles in their street, and effectively promoted public transportation, even non-motorized forms of travel like walking and hiking among their citizens. Among the Asian economic powers, Korea, Japan and Singapore have taken strides to follow their European counterparts, wherein car makers in the region have created technologies that lead to environmentally friendly cars.

In the Philippines, efforts by the government and concerned NGOs have created an awareness that air pollution is something that all of us should fight through simple acts. While bio-fuel production has slowly gained acceptance among car owners, something still needs to be done with the continued increase in toxic gases like sulfur and nitrogen oxide emissions, and particulate matter, especially found in the city atmosphere.

The Paint that Knocks Out NOx

BOYSEN® KNOxOUT™ represents a big change in what paint can do. Traditionally paint has been used to protect and beautify structures such as walls, doors and roofs. Now, KNOxOUT™ introduces a new concept – paint that protects people from the ill effects of air pollution. While most ‘eco-friendly’ paints are focused on low VOC levels to minimize their negative impact on the environment, BOYSEN® KNOxOUT™ establishes a new paradigm for green paints – that of an eco-ACTive paint with Air Cleaning Technology, which effectively transforms painted areas into “air purifiers” that continuously work to reduce air pollution and improve the environment.

KNOxOUT™ is the first air cleaning paint in the world with CristalActiv photocatalytic technology that effectively transforms painted areas into air purifying surfaces that help protect people from the ill health effects of air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It contains photocatalytic titanium dioxide (TiO2), which upon exposure to light, transforms ordinary water vapor to free radicals that break down NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), the two components of smog. Harmful NOx gas is converted to nitric acid that is rapidly neutralized by alkaline calcium carbonate particle in the paint, producing harmless quantities of calcium nitrate and negligible amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) and water.

KNOxOUT™ not only meets the VOC limits set by international paint eco-labeling standards, but it actually has the potential to achieve a net VOC reduction in its lifetime; in other words, it will break down more VOCs in the air when dry than the small amounts of VOCs it has when wet.

Already, through its clean air initiative project called One Wall, One World has been implemented in key cities in Metro Manila like Marikina and Makati, where the positive effects of using BOYSEN® KNOxOUT™ is already felt by the residents.
